The New Haven Youth & Recreation department provides a host of physical and non-traditional activities geared to promote health and well-being for families and individuals through recreational activities. Our goal is to promote a healthy, safe, fun-filled environment that encourages a lifetime of wellness.
Basketball League @ Various Schools
This league is for children in kindergarten through eighth grades. Fall 2025 information is forthcoming.
Crochet w/ Regina
This is for beginners. Come out and learn some basic stitches while learning how to make a few pieces to keep. ALL supplies are included in the fee. If you already know how to crochet and is looking for a place to complete projects or get some support, this is the place for you too.
Indoor/Outdoor Tennis
For beginners ages 5-7 and advance ages 7-12. This program is designed to help each participant at their level of experience. It is designed to give the basic knowledge and techniques of the sport as well as enhance what you have already learned.

Kickball
Legos @ Coogan
Line Dancing @ Coogan
Come out and learn some line dances. This is not your typical "country" line dancing. In this class you will learn different dances outside of the "electric slide or cha-cha slide. We have beginners and Intermediate Beginners on Tuesday nights and Advanced on Thursdays for those who need a more upbeat class. Class is a lot of fun. You should try it!
Lifeguard Training Course
Here is your chance to become a Lifeguard with the City of New Haven Department of Youth and Recreation. Be on the look out for future dates.
Open Schools/Gym @ Various Schools
Open Schools/Gym will start Tuesday, November 18, 2025 and will end May 14, 2026. This program is open Monday - Thursday from 5:30 -8:00pm. This year the program will run out of Troup, John Martinez, Roberto Clemente, Lincoln Bassett, Nathan Hale and Ross/Woodward. Please look at the schedule for the exact buildings and days that gym will be open. Important Information: Participants over 18 must show a valid ID when signing into the gym. Students 17 and under must provide a student ID number or other form of ID. ALL participants who enter the gym MUST wear gym attire (no jeans, crocs etc.). NO exceptions. This program will be canceled when school is closed for weather or planned early dismissals, closings, school vacations & school events.
Ballet, Hip Hop, Modern Dance and Majorette
Do you got the dance moves... This may be the place for you. Come on out to our dance classes. They are fun and invigorating. Let's keep moving.

Swimming Lessons/ Open Swim
Join us for our swimming lessons. Our experienced lifeguards will teach you how to swim with various techniques.
Yoga with the Elm City Yogis @ many locations.
Come out and learn different breathing techniques and stretches. This is mindfulness at its best.

Script Writing: Learn how to write a short script of your own. Let your imagination come to life on paper.
