All vendors and contractors performing work for, or providing services to, the City are required to maintain adequate insurance coverage throughout the duration of their contract. These requirements exist to protect the public, City employees, and contractors themselves from financial loss arising out of work performed on the City's behalf. Insurance must be obtained from carriers licensed to do business in this state and rated no lower than A– VII by A.M. Best.

At a minimum, most contracts require vendors and contractors to carry Commercial General LiabilityCommercial Automobile Liability, and Workers' Compensation and Employers' Liability insurance. Contracts involving professional services — such as design, engineering, or consulting — typically require Professional Liability (Errors & Omissions) coverage as well. Specific coverage types, minimum limits, and any additional requirements are set forth in each contract and may vary based on the nature and scope of work.

The City of New Haven must be named as an additional insured on all required liability policies, and contractor coverage must be designated as primary and non-contributory with respect to any insurance maintained by the City. Prior to commencing work, contractors must provide a current certificate of insurance — along with copies of any required endorsements — to the City's Risk Manager for review and approval. Certificates must reflect a minimum 30-day written notice of cancellation to the City.

Failure to maintain the required insurance, or allowing coverage to lapse during the contract term, may result in a stop-work order, contract suspension, or termination. Questions regarding specific insurance requirements for a contract should be directed to the City's Purchasing Division or Risk Management Office.

  •  Insurance will be required for the entire term of the contract. The insurance agent contact information (name , email, phone number) must be on the COI.  COI should be emailed to your project contact (see award notice) and to NHpurchasingCOI@newhavenct.gov
