Department of Public Works maintains a weekly schedule for collecting trash and recycling throughout New Haven. The brown 48 gallon toter is used for trash and the blue 96 gallon toter is used for recycling items only. Both toters must be placed curbside before scheduled collections and removed within 24 hours after being collected. If toters are needed, residents should call Resident Services at (203) 946 - 7700.
With single stream recycling, all recyclables can be mixed together in the blue toter. If the toter has non-recyclable items such as; plastic bags, food waste, Styrofoam, DPW cannot empty it. To help decide what is and isn’t recyclable check this recycling flyer. (Spanish)
Curbside city recycling is available to all residences with six units or less. If the building has more than 6 units or if it is a commercial entity, a “site cleanliness plan” listing the responsible hauler must be filed with Solid Waste Recycling Authority since recycling is required by state law.
Throughout the year, Public Works and Take2 Recycling hosts Special Electronic Recycling Collections in New Haven neighborhoods. Such opportunities help residents to recycle their electronics without having to pick up coupons at DPW and utilize them at the Residential Waste Drop-Off. Those special collections will be listed on What’s New page when they are announced.
Trash & Recycling will not be picked up on official City Holidays. Instead, pick up will be a day later. For example, if holiday is on a Monday, Monday’s route will be collected on Tuesday and the rest of the week’s routes will all be a day later than regularly scheduled.
