The New Haven Department of Parks, Recreation and Trees provides a host of physical and non-traditional activities geared to promote health and well-being for families and individuals through recreational activities. Our goal is to promote a healthy, safe, fun-filled environment that encourages a lifetime of wellness.

Chess Club

This program is designed for beginners and advanced players.  Learning and playing chess will help develop thinking skills, patience and thoughtfulness.      It can contribute to academic performance and improve the ability to think rationally.  Players will be able to compete in tournaments. 

Kids Arts and Craft Club - Salperto

Participants will be able to express themselves through the different kinds of projects.  Arts and crafts enhances creativity, imagination and self-esteem.

Saturday Science - Salperto
Designed to give our participants hands on experience with everyday science.  Science allows us to explore and discover new things.

Billiards
Designed to help teach the game of “pool”.  Playing pool can help with focusing and paying attention to details. At the end of the program, players will participate in a tournament against others and walk away feeling confident about the sport.
Family Paint Nights
Whether you come with your family,  or if you decide to come out by yourself or with friends.  This program is designed to teach you how to paint on canvas using different techniques.  The instructor will come up a theme and then demonstrate what has to be done to create your own “masterpiece.”
Line Dancing - Coogan
This program is designed for beginners and advanced line dancers.  Our instructor will teach you step by step moves to all of the popular line dances.  This program will get your heart rate up and have you shedding pounds also.

Pottery
This four week program is set up to give you the tools and techniques you would use to create a piece you would be proud of.  Pottery improves spontaneity and self-expression.
Yoga

Designed to help relieve stress by meditating.  Yoga also is beneficial to maintaining a balanced metabolism, increased flexibility, muscle strength and tone.  It also beneficial to mental and physical health.

Cardio Kickboxing & Exercise
Designed to help build stamina, improve coordination and flexibility, and burn calories while building lean muscle.  Each work out is designed by our personal trainer to give you a complete workout.

A Capital New Year’s Eve Washington DC: (December 30, 2019-January 1, 2020):  New Year’s Eve in Washington, DC is truly spectacular.  From the National Christmas Tree to Holiday displays, your favorite music, ice-skating at an outdoor rink, Stroll through “Seasons Greetings” at the US Botanical Gardens, the District is a great place to spend some time during the holiday season.
Maple Sugaring in the Berkshires & Norman Rockwell Museum:(March 15, 2020) Spring is finally here and it’s time to participate in an old New England Springtime Tradition—Maple Syrup making!  March is Maple Syrup Month, where sugar houses all over New England open their doors and welcome visitors to learn how to make maple syrup and then to enjoy some fantastic samples.

Wright’s Farm Restaurant & Twin River Casino:(April 24, 2020) The Twin River Casino located in Lincoln, Rhode Island is the state’s largest gaming and entertainment venue as well as its top tourist and cultural attraction. Formerly known as Lincoln Park, the renovated facility offers 162,000 square feet of gaming space with over 5000 gaming positions.  The casino operates over 4200 slot machines and virtual table games (including blackjack and Roulette.)  
Intrepid & Enterprise:(April 26, 2020) One of the most successful ships in U.S. history is now one of the most unique attractions in New York City.  Building on the long and distinguished history of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, the Museum provides a glimpse back to a time when the future of the free world hinged on these great ships.

Pool Rules
NO Food or Drinks allowed on deck.
NO Shoes allowed on deck.
NO Running or horseplay on the deck or in Locker rooms.
NO Relieving of your bodily functions in the pool water.
NO Gum or foul language at all.
NO Horseplay or dunking of other people in the water.
NO Diving into shallow end of the pool.
NO DIAPERS children with swim diapers must wear rubber pants over swim wear.
SHOWERS must be taken with warm water and soap before entering the water.
SWIM CAPS must be worn to cover any long hair longer than ear length.
BATHING SUITS must be worn with netting, no shorts or cutoffs. You may wear a T-shirt in the water ONLY if it is WHITE. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE.
PLEASE do not touch or hang onto other people while in the water.
