This is highly responsible administrative and professional position involving the oversight and management of the Department of Transportation, Traffic, and Parking. This includes professional, technical work, customer service, and managing on-street parking regulation, including all aspects of parking enforcement, revenue generation and collection. Work involves responsibility for managing plans and recommendations for transportation system improvements, safe and complete streets for all road users, traffic projections, and the maintenance of the City’s traffic signal system. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Economic Development Administrator with much latitude for the exercise of independent professional judgment. Position is appointed by the Mayor for a four-year term.
Graduation from an accredited four-year college in the field of civil, traffic, or transportation engineering, transportation, public administration, or other urban planning course work, with a preference for a graduate degree in a similar field. Professional Engineer Registration preferred. Applicant should also have the following knowledge, abilities, and skills: At least 5 years managerial experience, including the ability to manage a large staff. Knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic engineering. Must have excellent communication skills. Ability to handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines. Excellent judgement and leadership skills. Strong computer skills required. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Department staff, other City departments, elected officials, Boards and Commissions, and the general public. Ability to interpret relevant Charter, Ordinance, state and federal laws.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Connecticut driver’s license. Residency in the City of New Haven is required within six months of appointment.
