[NEW HAVEN, CT] -- This evening, the New Haven Board of Alders passed an amended version of Mayor Justin Elicker's proposed $703.7 million budget for the City of New Haven for Fiscal Year 2025-2026. Following the vote, Mayor Elicker released the following statement:
"Amid federal headwinds and volatility, as New Haveners we can be proud that we will be adopting a city budget that will continue to provide critical municipal services, increase our investment in our schools, prioritize public safety, expand support for our most vulnerable residents, and meet our long-term financial obligations.
Once again, the city continues to do its part when it comes to education funding by increasing the annual budget for New Haven Public Schools by another $5 million, providing $1.5 million to continue afterschool and summer tutoring for struggling students, and committing $15 million in our Capital Budget for school building and facility improvements. As Governor Lamont and state lawmakers work to finalize the state’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year, we need the state to do its part and provide more adequate and equitable funding in order to avoid potential layoffs and painful program cuts in New Haven and other school districts across the state.
I want to thank every New Haven resident who participated in the budget process and the Board of Alders for their continue collaboration and partnership in ensuring we enact a city budget that reflects our shared values, strengthens our communities, and provides more New Haveners with the opportunity to thrive.”
